On an annual basis spring and summer always bring out the ambition in homeowners to take on the various household projects that both maintain a house as well as those projects which are purely cosmetic. Outdoor landscaping projects are usually the latter and are usually the more enjoyable projects to take on. This is because the work is simply to improve what is already there rather than repair what has broken. When it comes to landscaping though, there are a few projects which are more challenging than others. For the complete novice it may be wise to start on the simple projects first before tackling the more complex projects.
Some of the most beginner friendly landscaping projects typically have to do with basic gardening and small plant landscaping. Most houses that haven’t been landscaped in ages usually have a defined space for a garden. Sometimes the garden area is even raised or identified by concrete blocks, bricks, or curbing. These areas are usually good places to start because the basic layout has already been traced.
I also like to consider raised flower beds for garden spaces as these are usually slight improvements over their cousins which aren’t raised. I also like to design a perennial garden into the space because perennials will not have to be landscaped year after year as the perennials will bloom over and over again. Basically once you have a good perennial garden design you shouldn’t have to think about the types of plants you have anymore; all you will have to do is maintain them throughout the year.
If you need help designing a perennial garden most home stores with garden centers can help you identify the ideal perennials for your climate and they usually have them in stack so you can hand select the plants in front of you.
If you choose to raise the flower bed then simply create a miniature retaining wall out our existing or purchased bricks and backfill the bed with outdoor soil suitable for the plants and shrubs you choose. Ideally your raised planting bed will be high enough to obviously be a designed and purposeful space. It should allow for drainage and should make your yard look more interesting to the eye.
Landscaping projects on a grander scale may take more experience and thought but a basic raised flower bed and perennial garden should be a quick and simple weekend project that you should be able to enjoy for many years to come. Even if you are a novice you have no reason to think landscaping is beyond your capabilities.
